Americans are unaware of how the food industry has taken a page out of “Big Tobacco’s playbook” by increasing our addiction to sugar - in its various forms under various names.

Let’s start with the obvious. A 12 ounce can of soda has 40 grams of sugar. To put that in terms everybody can understand, 4 grams of sugar equals 1 teaspoon of sugar therefore, 12 ounces of soda contains 10 teaspoons of sugar.

So let’s use that metric to see what “healthy” foods are loaded with sugar that we’re not aware of:

• Brand Name orange juice one 8-ounce serving has 22 grams of sugar equals 5+ teaspoons of sugar. So let’s compare this to the soda, 12-ounce serving of orange juice, same size as our soda, equals 8+ teaspoons of sugar.

• Brand Name fruit flavored yogurt a 5-ounce container has approximately 15-18 grams of sugar. That’s almost one teaspoon of sugar per each ounce!

• Like sugar on your burger and fries? Ketchup is 25% sugar. The ingredient list on the bottle is as follows: tomato concen...

Vegetable oils are some of the most misunderstood and over-recommended foods in the health community. You’ve probably heard these referred to as “heart-healthy” oils. They are anything but!!

Canola oil, soybean oil, corn oil, sunflower oil, and safflower oil are found in the majority of processed foods, even the ones labeled organic. What makes these oils so unhealthy is the process used to extract the oils from the seeds. To extract the oil manufacturers use a very high-heat harsh chemical process that completely destroys any healthy aspect of the seeds and alters their composition which makes the resulting oil toxic to your body’s cells.

Since these oils are chemically produced it’s really not surprising that they contain harmful chemicals. Most vegetable oils and their products contain BHA (butylated hydroxanisole) and BHT (butylated toluene) which have artificial antioxidants that keep food from oxidizing or spoiling too quickly. Maybe that’s why they can sit on supermarket shelves f...

It’s said that “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day” How do you start your day? Try Oatmeal. A delicious breakfast that helps prevent heart disease and promotes weight loss.

How does Oatmeal help to prevent heart disease? Oats contain an anti-inflammatory and “antioxidant nutrients” that can help prevent buildup in the arteries and maintain arterial function. The fiber in oatmeal binds to “cholesterol” resulting in lower blood cholesterol levels. In fact, just one serving a day of oats may lower cholesterol.

How does Oatmeal promote weight loss? The soluble fiber in oatmeal forms a gel in the stomach delaying stomach emptying. The oatmeal fiber makes people feel full for a longer period helping with weight loss. In a double-blind randomized trial of overweight and obese men and women, almost “90%” of the oatmeal treated subjects reduced their body weight compared to the control group that had no weight loss

Steel cut oats are the best, they’re the least processed which means t...

Most people are aware that cell phones have made distracted driving in this country an epidemic. But are cell phones causing distracted fitness?

A person is working out in the gym, doing dumbbell biceps curls. They do 12 reps put down the weights and pick their cell phone and text their friends or get on Facebook, and then in another minute or two they do another 12 reps.

If you really want to get fit and in shape it requires Focus and Intensity. Distractions (TV, cell phones) not so much. If you can talk on the phone, read a magazine, or carry on a conversation in a normal tone of voice when you’re working out- You’re not working out!

Most of the cattle in this country are raised on huge factory farms called CAFO (concentrated animal feedlots operations). The cattle are crowded together like sardines. They are fed genetically-modified corn, synthetic growth hormones, and antibiotics. A side note here-80% of the antibiotics sold in this country go to livestock.

Why? Because the conditions they’re raised in are so dirty that they have to be on a constant doses of antibiotics so they don’t get sick. Now some cattle do succumb to disease - parts of these dead cows are then fed to the live ones.

Think about it this way-there’s nothing magic that happens between the cow’s mouth and your mouth. So when it comes to beef, pork, and poultry - buy 100% pasture-raised, it’s not only healthier, it tastes better.

Remember “You are what your food eats”
